Through efficient and creative design, this family checked all the recreation boxes in their urban backyard
This little urban backyard packs a big punch, checking all the boxes on the homeowner’s outdoor recreation checklist.
Through efficient and smart design, this limited lot serves up a lot of style and fun. The active, busy homeowners wanted to make the most of their yard and the time they spent in it. This included a place to eat, congregate with their adult children and friends, garden and even play pickleball!
IN THE ZONE
Distinct and purposeful areas were delineated in the yard so that each space could make the most of its real estate. Thermal bluestone hardscaping, low maintenance synthetic turf, and a cedar pergola create a natural gathering and relaxing space.
An existing covered outdoor seating area was upgraded with raw cedar beams and posts and a stained beadboard ceiling. This area also features new herringbone stone hardscaping and an outdoor fireplace. Adjacent to this is a bar-height table with storage, flanked with bar stools to create the perfect spot for grilling and watching the game.
Raised garden beds provide an attractive and functional divider between the relaxing space and the pickleball/basketball court.
A SECOND CHANCE FOR A FIRST IMPRESSION
Access from the multifunctional yard into the home was also given a fun refresh. Penny tile with a custom “Hello Sunshine” message was installed in the back entryway which now holds an intimate conversation space and small built-in bar dining area. Large glass patio doors truly do welcome the sunshine into the back of the house, beckoning you outside.
